One of the most well-known Hindu pilgrimages in India is the revered Char Dham Yatra, which takes place in Uttarakhand. Four sacred destinations are visited during this religious tour namely Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.
The high-altitude holy sites are open for only half of the year, starting in the summer (May) and ending as winter approaches (October or November). During the rainy season, landslides may take place and due to this reason the roads become risky and the Char Dham yatra does not take place during the months of July and August. However, the yatra resumes in the month of September.

The Chardham Yatra season is between May to October. The months of May and June remains pleasant throughout with maximum temperature ranging from:

  • Kedarnath: 9℃ to 11℃ 
  • Badrinath: 9℃ to 13℃  
  • Gangotri : 8℃ to 12℃ 
  • Yamunotri: 14℃ to 18℃ 

On the other hand, the minimum temperatures ranging from:

  •  Kedarnath: 3℃ to -1℃ 
  • Badrinath: 4℃ to -2℃ 
  • Gangotri: 2℃ to -3℃ 
  • Yamunotri: 3℃ to 7℃ . 

During July and August, the yatra remains closed due to the monsoon season. However the Chardham Yatra resumes in September. During September and October, the weather becomes comparatively cold with maximum temperatures ranging from

  • Kedarnath: 8℃ to 12℃
  • Badrinath: 9℃ to 13℃
  • Gangotri: 8℃ to 14℃
  • Yamunotri: 13℃ to 16℃

 On the other hand the minimum temperatures ranges from:

  • Kedarnath: 5℃ to -1℃.
  • Badrtinath:-0℃ to 5℃
  • Gangotri: -2℃ to 4℃
  • Yamunotri: 3℃ to 8℃


Badrinath snowfall is seen more than usual. The winters are cold and chilly and the area gets covered in snow. Due to this reason the yatra does not take place in winters because of extreme cold.
