The rugged landscapes of the Deccan are not just made of basalt and dust; they are woven with the threads of a rare spiritual tapestry that unites the deepest traditions of the Indian soul. To travel through the Aurangabad and Nanded circuit is to witness a sacred convergence where the ancient echoes of the Shiva Purana, the martial grace of the Sikh Takhts, and the primal energy of the Shakti Peethas meet.
This journey begins at Grishneshwar, the last of the twelve Jyotirlingas, where the red volcanic rock itself seems to breathe with the name of Mahadev. The origin of this shrine is a heart-stirring story of a devotee named Kusuma, who would daily create and worship a clay Lingam before immersing it in a nearby pond. Even when her own son was killed out of jealousy and his body thrown into that very pond, Kusuma’s hand did not tremble in her devotion. As she performed her regular immersion, her son miraculously rose from the waters and Lord Shiva appeared in his luminous form, choosing to stay here eternally as Grishneshwar—the "Lord of Compassion"—to honour her unshakeable faith.
The path then turns toward the banks of the Godavari at Nanded, reaching Hazur Sahib, one of the five Takhts of the Sikh faith. This is the "Abode of the Presence," where the tenth Guru, Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, spent his final days on earth. In a moment of supreme spiritual significance, it was here in 1708 that the Guru ended the line of living Gurus and passed the eternal guruship to the Guru Granth Sahib. The air in Nanded is perpetually thick with the resonance of Gurbani and the selfless spirit of Seva, reminding every pilgrim that the Divine is found not just in stones, but in the Word and in service to humanity.
The sanctity of this region is further elevated by a climb to Mahurgad, a powerful Shakti Peeth dedicated to Renuka Mata. Perched atop a hill, this site is steeped in the lore of the Puranas as the birthplace of Lord Parshuram. It is believed that the Mother Goddess resides here in her most protective form, watching over the Deccan plateau. From the silent, meditative caves of Ellora to the flowing waters of the Godavari, this circuit is a profound chapter in the soul’s journey, teaching us that whether through the path of Bhakti, Seva or Shakti, the destination remains the One.
