Hindu calendar mentions Dev Deepawali on Kartik Purnima, which falls fifteen days after Diwali, most often called the 'Diwali of the Gods'. It's commemorated in the belief of Shiv Ji's triumph over the demon Tripurasura. The story is about power, pride, and control over them.
It begins with three demon brothers to whom Brahma Ji granted a boon that they'll be defeated by nothing and no one but a single arrow. To put this chaos to an end, Shiv Ji took the form of Tripurari to strike them, the Tripurasur, down with a single arrow; this entire incident is then called Tripura Samhara. The divine intervention of Shiv Ji became a moment to honour the triumph of the divine over evil, when all Gods and Goddesses descended to Earth from the heavens. This tradition continues till now, so on the occasion of Dev Diwali all the Gods descend from the heavens.
As dusk approaches, all 84 ghats of the city, from Assi Ghat in the south to Raj Ghat in the north, are lit with millions of mitti diyas, their flames flickering as if the entire riverfront has been drowned in gold. Visitors and spectators stand at the Ganga Ghat's edge as chants, temple bells, and the rhythmic divinity of the Ganga Aarti rise into the air during starry dark skies.
However, the true grandeur of Dev Deepawali reveals itself from the water: a boat ride, whether a traditional wooden bajra or a motorboat departing from Assi Ghat or Shivala Ghat. From this vantage point, the reflections of a million diyas ripple and multiply across the water, doubling the illusion of light until the river itself seems to glow from within. It is from this same boat that you will perform a small Deep Daan ritual on your own.
