Special Yatra: The Great Indian Pilgrimage & Festivals

India is entirely spiritual, and it’s what is reflected in its movements, be it a riverfront walk or mountain climb, or a desert crossing as part of the traditional influence. While the icy paths to Amarnath or chariot rides in Puri during Rath Yatra have been drawing travellers for centuries, a host of special yatras and fests have been gaining popularity as each year millions of pilgrims turn up to mark their faith.

What these yatras have in common is their ability to take people to varied locations, from huge gatherings like Kumbh Mela and Gangasagar Mela to isolated treks like Hemkund Sahib Yatra or Char Dham Yatra or even festivals such as Navratri, Durga Puja, Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi that mark the celebratory zeal of Indians in their devotion to gods and goddesses. All of them represent various facets of Indian ethos of joy and solitude, and of community and faith.

While for many, any such pilgrimage begins as a personal quest, each one of them eventually takes the participant beyond themselves into a wider world. This is perhaps because a yatra often represents a passage where a person willingly undergoes hardship for a higher goal or to attain a certain degree of self-realization. The 41-day-long fast by a Sabarimala pilgrim, the Kanwariya trekker who carries water from Kumbh for weeks, or the Amarnath pilgrims who reach the sacred cave temple in the high altitudes of Jammu and Kashmir are all examples of individuals undergoing an ordeal for their faith. Such a venture can be a gateway to a new vision and understanding of life, as it offers a unique insight into the traveller’s ability to stand up to challenges and overcome them.

For many, a pilgrimage, then, can be a truly personal experience. This is why India’s special yatras and festivals are such an important part of our cultural legacy and ethos.
