Dev Bhoomi, or the Land of the Gods, is a spiritually charged area in Himachal Pradesh. The ancient Puranas say that this holy land was made holy during the Satya Yuga, when Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut off the body of Goddess Sati to free Lord Shiva from his destructive grief (Tandava). The 51 pieces that fell across the subcontinent became the Shakti Peeths. Himachal is lucky to have many of these divine energy centers.
The journey starts at Naina Devi, where the Goddess Sati’s eyes (Nayan) fell. It is believed that Naina Devi Mata (mother) lives here and leads her followers through the darkness of ignorance. Jwalamukhi is deep in the hills, where the Goddess appears as the Eternal Flame. According to history, even the powerful Mughal Emperor Akbar could not put off these nine natural flames in the Jwalamukhi’s temple. This shows that the Divine Mother is the most powerful.
You come to Chintpurni, the home of Mata Chhinnamastika, after walking through peaceful pine forests. As the "Remover of Worries," she is the Great Cosmic Power who gives her children instant blessings. The path then goes to the Kangra Valley, where Brijeshwari Devi lives. There, people worship the Goddess in the form that had defeated the demon Mahishasura. The pilgrimage ends at Chamunda Devi, where the Goddess took on a fierce form to kill the demons Chanda and Munda.
