‘Manimahesh’ is a sacred name made of two words. ‘Mani’ means jewel, while ‘Mahesh’ is the name of Lord Shiva. This sacred peak at a height of 18,547 ft got its name as it is considered “The Jewel on Shiva’s Crown”. The folklores believe that a Mani sits on Lord Shiva’s crown atop the peak and on clear full moon night, devotees can see the moon’s rays reflecting off this jewel.
According to Shiv Puranas, Lord Shiva created Manimahesh after his marriage to Goddess Parvati as one of their five abodes. They both stayed here from time to time. Once when Lord Shiva performed penance at Manimahesh and the lake was formed from the water cascading from his matted hair (Jata). Notably, the Manimahesh lake has two distinct parts. Gauri Kund where Goddess Parvati bathed and is reserved for women and Shiva Kund reserved for men where Lord Shiva bathed.
Before moving towards the lake, pilgrims first visit Bharmour and seek blessings at the Brahmani Devi temple. Only after this, the yatra is considered complete. The path ahead is tough, the weather changes quickly, but people still walk with faith and devotion. Because here, every step feels personal and every glimpse of Manimahesh feels like Shiva is calling and guiding you.
