“Manimahesh” is derived from two words — ‘Mani’ (Jewel) and ‘Mahesh’ (Lord Shiva), meaning the “Jewel of Lord Shiva.” Located at an altitude of approximately 4,080 meters (13,390 ft) in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, Manimahesh Lake is considered one of the holiest pilgrimage sites dedicated to Mahadev, standing in spiritual prominence alongside Mansarovar and Adi Kailash.

According to ancient Himalayan legends, Lord Shiva created this sacred lake after his marriage to Goddess Parvati and is believed to reside eternally at the peak of Mount Manimahesh Kailash, which towers majestically above the water. A unique legend tells of the "Mani" (divine jewel) on Shiva’s crown; it is said that on certain auspicious nights, a mysterious light shines from the peak and reflects in the lake. Devotees also speak of the unsuccessful attempts by mortals to scale the peak—it is believed that no one can summit the mountain unless Lord Shiva permits it. Taking a holy dip in the icy waters during the Yatra is believed to cleanse the sins of a lifetime and grant the devotee a reset of their Karma cycle under the watchful gaze of the "Mahesh."
