Kashi (Varanasi) & Its Spiritual Significance

The Sanskrit root kash, which means "to shine," is where the word "Kashi" comes from. This makes it the "City of Light" that gives spiritual light. The Kashi Khanda of the Skanda Purana says that Varanasi is the oldest city in the world. Lord Shiva built it at the beginning of time. People believe that the city is not on the ground of the mortal world, but is instead held up by Lord Shiva's Trident (Trishul). This holy height makes it a safe place that can't be touched by time or destruction. The Shri Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga is the city's spiritual heart. Lord Shiva, the King of the Universe, lives there. People say that just one breath in this holy place can free you from Karma and lead you to Moksha.

The Goddess Ganga is a big part of Kashi's mythology. People say that the river flows north (Uttravahini) here to honour Lord Shiva's home. The city's 84 ghats, including the famous Manikarnika, are places where the physical and spiritual worlds come together. People believe that Shiva himself whispers the Taraka Mantra into the ears of the dead at Manikarnika to save them. Kaal Bhairav, the scary "Kotwal" or divine inspector of Kashi, is in charge of protecting this holy land. Pilgrims must get his permission before they can really enter the city. Kashi is still the best place for people who want to find the truth. It has the Vedic echoes of the Dashashwamedh Ghat and the Buddhist silence of nearby Sarnath.

Frequently Asked Questions about
Varanasi Spiritual Tour

Is it certain that the food is pure vegetarian?

Varanasi is a holy city where most of the food served is vegetarian. There are many well-known Satvik options near the temple corridors.

Can TTT set up a private guide for the trip to Sarnath?

Yes, we can send a knowledgeable guide to Sarnath to explain the historical and spiritual significance of the Buddhist relics there.

Are there lockers at the main temple where you can put your phone?

Yes, there are lockers near the Kashi Vishwanath Temple because electronics are not allowed inside the sanctum.

Is Sarnath far from the main city?

Sarnath is about 10 kilometres away. The drive usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, but the city's famous traffic can make it take longer.

Do we have to take our shoes off a lot?

Yes, you will need to take off your shoes at almost all temples and when you get on the boat. We suggest that you wear shoes that are comfortable and easy to take off.

Is it safe to ride a boat during the monsoon?

The levels of the river affect boat rides. When there are heavy monsoons (July to August), the government often limits boat traffic for safety reasons. If this happens, we offer other options.

Can we change the tour so that it includes a trip to the BHU campus?

Yes, for sure. The New Vishwanath Temple (Birla Temple) is on the BHU campus and is known for having one of the tallest temple towers in India.

What does the Kaal Bhairav Temple mean?

Kaal Bhairav is the guardian of Kashi. Pilgrims usually go to this temple first or last to "register" their visit to the holy city and ask for protection while they are there.

Is the Kashi Vishwanath Temple corridor easy for older people to get to?

Yes, the new hallway is meant to be big and easy to get to. There are ramps and battery-powered carts that seniors can use to get from the ghat area to the temple.

When is the best time to plan a trip to Varanasi in 2026?

The best time to visit is from October to March. Dev Deepawali in November is a special time to visit because the ghats are lit with millions of lamps.
