Prayagraj & Its Spiritual Significance

Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, is hailed as Teerthraj, the king of all pilgrimage centres. The word 'Prayag' signifies a place of supreme sacrifice; it is here that Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, is said to have performed the very first Yagna (sacrifice) after the creation of the world. According to the Puranas, Prayagraj is the site of the Triveni Sangam, the mystical confluence of three of India's holiest rivers: the visible Ganga and Yamuna, and the invisible, celestial Saraswati. Mythology states that during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), drops of the nectar of immortality (Amrit) fell here, making the waters a source of eternal purification. A holy dip at this confluence is believed to liberate the soul from the cycle of rebirth.

The city is also a vital seat of the Sacred Feminine, housing the Alopi Devi Temple, a unique Shakti Peeth where the Goddess is worshipped as a wooden palanquin, representing the spot where the last part of Goddess Sati's body disappeared. Another legendary landmark is the Akshayavat, the "Immortal Banyan Tree." As per the Ramayana, Lord Rama, Maa Sita, and Lakshmana rested under its shade during their exile. It is believed that this tree survives even the destruction of the universe. Guarding the city is the Bade Hanuman Ji, featuring a rare reclining idol of the Lord. Legend says that after burning Lanka, Hanuman Ji rested here, and the rising waters of the Ganga still touch His feet every year to seek His blessings.
