According to the Devi Bhagavata Purana and the Kalika Purana, Jalpaiguri is home to the Shri Bhramari Devi Temple, one of the 51 sacred Shakti Peethas. The significance of this site dates back to the Satya Yuga, when the left leg of Maa Sati fell here during Lord Shiva's Tandava. The Goddess is worshipped here as Bhramari (the Bumblebee), a form she took to slay the demon Arunasura. It is said that she sent countless black bees from her body to destroy the demon, and to this day, the temple on the banks of the Trishrota (Teesta) River is considered a powerhouse of Siddha energy.
The region is also home to the Jalpesh Temple, where a self-manifested (Swayambhu) Shiva Lingam has been worshipped since the time of the Jalpa Dynasty. In Hindu scriptures, the confluence of the Teesta and the foothills is viewed as a sacred gateway (Duar) where the terrestrial and celestial realms meet, making it a vital circuit for those seeking both Shakti and Shiva's blessings.
