Situated at an altitude of 5200 ft in the Trikuta hills of Jammu, Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine is not just a temple that pilgrims visit. It is a calling (Maiya Ka Bulawa). For many, the yatra begins long before they reach Katra. It starts with a mann ki ichha, a wish whispered quietly, often in difficult times.
According to long-held beliefs and stories passed quietly from one generation to another, Mata Vaishno Devi is seen as a form of Adi Shakti, the same eternal feminine energy that appears whenever balance in the world begins to fade. Mentions of this divine power taking human form are found across traditions linked to the Mahabharata and several Puranic narratives, where the Devi descends not for glory, but to guide and protect dharma. Devotees often connect this belief to the time of the Treta Yug, when the divine presence is said to have appeared as Vaishnavi, choosing meditation in the Trikuta hills over power or recognition.
The story most devotees grow up hearing is of Bhairavnath and Mata’s long journey through these very hills. After years of meditation and teaching, she retreated into the cave to continue her tapasya. When Bhairavnath followed her with impure intent, Mata revealed her true form and ultimately liberated him, granting moksha. Even today, the yatra is considered incomplete without visiting Bhairav Baba Temple, reminding devotees that forgiveness and grace are as divine as power.
Inside the sacred cave, Mata is worshipped not as an idol, but as three natural rock formations (Pindis), representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati. There is something humbling about this. No decoration. No grandeur. Just stone, silence and belief. Standing there, people often struggle to explain what they feel. Some cry. Some smile without knowing why. Some just stand quietly, hands folded, heart full.
The 12-km trek from Katra to the Bhawan is not easy, but that is perhaps the point. With every step, the noise of daily life fades. The chant of “Jai Mata Di” fills the air, strangers walk together and fatigue somehow turns into strength. It is said that Mata calls only those whom she wants to meet and maybe that is why, despite the crowds, every devotee feels the journey is deeply personal.

Overview
Experience this 3-day sacred Vaishno Devi Yatra from Jammu to the holy Bhawan of Maa Vaishno Devi in Trikuta hills, thoughtfully arranged by Trip To Temples. The Maa Vaishno Devi shrine rests at an altitude of about 5,200 ft and the journey includes a gradual 12-km uphill walk from Katra. Most pilgrims complete this 24 km of a round-trip in a single day at their own pace. Options like battery cars, ponies, palki or even helicopter services are available for added ease.
The yatra remains open throughout the year, though the most comfortable months are March to June and September to November, when the weather stays relatively pleasant, with daytime temperatures usually ranging from 15°C to 30°C, while winters can turn quite cold. Suitable for families, senior citizens and first-time yatris alike, this short yet deeply personal pilgrimage combines planned stays in Katra, vegetarian meals, ground assistance and clear guidance at every step. So somewhere between the first chant of Jai Mata Di and the quiet moment after darshan, the journey begins to feel less like travel and more like a call that was waiting to be answered.

Frequently Asked Questions about
Answer the Divine Call With Mata Vaishno Devi Pilgrimage
Is it okay to bring my phone or camera to the Bhawan?
You can bring your phone on the hike, but you can't bring it, along with cameras, belts and other electronic devices, into the Holy Cave. Before you can join the Darshan queue, you must leave them in the free cloakrooms that the Shrine Board has set up at the Bhawan.
Do you need to meet any specific medical requirements for the trek?
There is no need for a formal medical certificate for the trek, but pilgrims with heart problems, asthma, or high blood pressure should see a doctor first. Banganga, Adhkuwari and the Bhawan all have emergency medical centers with oxygen tanks and intensive care units.
When is the best time to go in 2026 for Darshan?
The best weather is from March to June (spring and summer) and from September to October (fall). Avoid crowds by going on weekdays and not during busy times like Navratri, New Year or summer vacations. In winter months from December to February it is beautiful and quiet, but the temperature can drop below zero and it can snow.
What should people who can't walk do?
For older people or people who have trouble moving around, there are a few options:
- Battery cars run between Adhkuwari and the Bhawan.
- The helicopter flies from Katra to Sanjichhat, then you have to walk or ride a pony for 2.5 km.
- Pony/Palki can be availed anywhere on the track and the Shrine Board sets the prices.
- Passenger Ropeway takes only three minutes to get from Bhawan to Bhairon Ghati.
How do I reserve a helicopter and what are the prices for 2026?
You can book helicopter tickets on the official website up to 60 days in advance. The regulated one-way fare from Katra to Sanjichhat is about ₹2,320 in 2026 and the round trip fare is ₹4,640 per person. To avoid scams, always book directly through the official website.
What is the RFID card and how do I get one?
The RFID card is now used instead of the old paper slips to get into the track. It is a required card that you must wear for safety and crowd control. There are several Yatra Registration Counters (YRC) in Katra where you can pick it up, such as the Katra Bus Stand and the Railway Station. You have to go through the first check post at Banganga within six hours of getting your card.
Do you have to register online for the 2026 Yatra?
Yes, all pilgrims must sign up. You can do this for free on the official Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board website. You will get a Yatra Parchi (Slip) after you sign up. You need this to get your RFID Yatra Access Card when you get to Katra.
