Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2025 to be resumed soon; Vikram Misri engages in dialogue with Wang-Yi

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang-Yi and Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong on a two-day visit to Beijing to discuss the steps to stabilize India-China diplomatic relations. Both parties agreed to resume Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in the summer and direct air services to and fro.
This move has significantly come up after PM Narendra Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the BRICS summit held in Kazan; followed by the recent 23rd meeting of special representatives held between the NSA Ajit Doval and Wang-Yi in December 2024.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated in its press release “Foreign Secretary Shri Vikram Misri visited Beijing on 26-27th January for a meeting of the Foreign Secretary-Vice Foreign Minister mechanism between India and China on 27th of January. As agreed between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping at their meeting in Kazan in October, Foreign Secretary and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister H.E. Mr. Sun Weidong reviewed the state of India-China bilateral relations comprehensively and agreed to take certain people-centric steps to stabilize and rebuild ties.”
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra was on halt for five years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the India-China military standoff. However, the recent bilateral dialogue between India and China to restart direct air services and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2025 is expected to build stronger cultural ties between the two nations. The restart of Kailash Yatra in the summer of 2025 is great news for Indian tourists and devotees of Lord Shiva. Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is one of the highly revered pilgrimages for Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists; as Hindu scriptures believe it to be the abode of Lord Shiva. This agreement will now allow devotees to experience Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar Darshan after a long wait where they can also perform Parikrama of Kailash Parvat and Lake Mansarovar.
Key Insights
Here are the five key takeaways from the dialogue held between India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, the Chinese Foreign Minister, and the Vice Foreign Minister:

A focus on the people-centric approach to bolster the India-China diplomatic relations. This includes engaging in discussions with think tanks followed by people-to-people exchanges as well.
- Set-up of India-China expert-level mechanism
Joint establishment of an India-China expert-level mechanism to talk about the provision of hydrological data and building a mechanism for trans-border rivers.
- Resolution of cross-border dispute
As 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of India-China diplomatic relations, both nations look forward to normalizing their diplomatic ties after the long-standing military conflict and border skirmishes, taking significant steps to resolve border disputes.
- Mutual standing in trade and economy
Both sides agreed to cooperate in the areas of bilateral trade and economy while maintaining peace and stability in Asia.
- Enhanced partnership
India and China discussed specific issues in the economy and trade which included building transparency while reviewing the existing mechanisms of dialogue and cooperation between both the nations.
While PM Modi’s talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the BRICS summit in Kazan led to the disengagement of troops along the Despaing plains and Demchok areas, the bilateral dialogue between Vikram Misri and the Chinese counterpart further signals a progressive shift in India-China diplomatic ties. The discussion held between both sides serves as the nod from the Government of China for the resumption of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
