India–China G20 Talks 2024: Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is Set to Reopen

In the G20 summit 2024 held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, External Affairs Minister Dr. S.Jaishankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi discussed steps to strengthen the bilateral relations between Beijing and New Delhi. The EAMs talked about the opening of direct flights between India and China and the reopening of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. 

The key issues addressed in the meeting were cooperation in security, trade, and diplomatic relations between Beijing and New Delhi. The resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and the sharing of information on trans-border rivers and direct flights is a breakthrough that signals enhanced cooperation between India and China.

Significantly, this positive move has come up after PM Modi’s talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the recently held BRICS summit in Russia. Since both nations have mutually arrived at disengagement, it is good news for Indian tourists who have been longing for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra—Lord Shiva’s abode.

The Ministry of External Affairs (Government of India) in its press release stated that the initiatives by both nations highlight mutual efforts to strengthen ties by fostering economic and cultural ties. The resolution of the military standoff along the LAC (Line of Actual Control) at Despang and Demchok plains in eastern Ladakh during the India-China Patrol Agreement is a significant move that indicates the bolstering of the diplomatic ties between the two nations.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, direct flights to and from the neighboring states were suspended. However, the G20 meeting between the foreign ministers of both states highlights the efforts to solidify the strategic partnership between Beijing and New Delhi. 

“We are strongly committed to a multipolar world, including a multipolar Asia. Where India is concerned, its foreign policy has been principled and consistent, marked by independent thought and action. We are against unilateral approaches to establish dominance. India does not view its relationships through the prism of other nations, said Jaishankar, as reported by ANI. India and China are set to observe 75 years of diplomatic ties. The strengthening of India-China relations is a move that can transform the geopolitical climate of Asia.
