Cops SDRF Takes Command of the Ambubachi Mela 2025 Security Arrangements, Millions Expected to Attend

Published : 23-Jun-2025 06:02:57 PM

The iconic Kamakhya Temple on the Nilachal hills is witnessing one of North East India’s largest religious gatherings, the Ambubachi Mela 2025, that commenced on June 22nd and will continue until June 26th this year. The temple doors will close at 2:56 PM on June 22, marking the beginning of 4-day Kamakhya Temple festival.

During the Ambubachi Mela 2025, the temple will remain closed for three days, symbolizing the goddess’s menstruation period, during which time no cooking, agricultural activity, or temple worship will be performed by devotees. The Kamakhya Temple rituals will be suspended as devotees believe the goddess is resting during her menstrual cycle. It is forbidden to enter the temple’s sanctum sanctorum during the first three days of the Ambubachi Mela. However, the temple will reopen on June 25 after bathing ceremonies, as the holy menstrual month comes to an end and fresh spiritual activities at this ancient Shakti Peeth commence, regular temple activities and darshan will resume on June 28th.

According to Vedic texts, the womb of Goddess Sati fell at the now Kamakhya Temple, and is one of the lively Shakti Peethas as Goddess Sati's Yoni dropped there, turning the entire location into a Yonimandala. The temple’s origins can be traced back to the early 8th-9th century. Kamakhya is renowned for its potent Tantric rituals, which center on the idea of Shakti (cosmic feminine energy), and the Ambubachi festival is related to the Tantric cult. The “Ambubachi” means ‘spoken with water,’ symbolizing the earth’s fertility period when rains make the land ready for procreation.

City Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta announced comprehensive security arrangements for the Ambubachi sadhus gathering and the massive influx of pilgrims. “The hill is prone to landslides; therefore, the State Disaster Rescue Force (SDRF) will be stationed to safeguard devotees,” he stated in a Times of India report.

The Ambubachi Mela preparations include strict traffic management, with devotees required to undertake the Ambubachi Kamakhya Devi pilgrimage 2025 on foot from the foothills, as vehicular movement will be restricted. To prevent chaos and maintain the spiritual atmosphere, authorities have suspended all VIP and VVIP facilities from June 21-30. In an unprecedented move to ensure safety during the Guwahati temple fair, authorities have decided not to provide food or accommodation services at Nilachal hill to prevent overcrowding and potential mishaps.

Also, during the Ambubachi Mela last year, nearly 25 lakh devotees visited the temple; officials anticipate the number to be at least as high in 2025. The festival attracts not only devotees from across India but also international visitors drawn to witness the unique celebration of divine feminine energy.

The Assam religious festival represents one of the most significant celebrations of Shakti’s worship in the world, where the natural biological cycle of womanhood is revered rather than considered taboo. This progressive spiritual philosophy has made the Ambubachi Mela a symbol of feminine empowerment and natural reverence, as thousands of sadhus, tantrics, and devotees prepare for this extraordinary spiritual gathering. The Kamakhya Temple stands ready to host yet another historic celebration of the divine feminine in 2025, continuing a tradition that has persevered for over a millennium in the heart of Assam.
