Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2025 via Sikkim's Nathula Pass, Infrastructure Development and Preparedness

Published : 22-May-2025 06:23:24 PM

After a five-year suspension due to COVID-19 and undefined border disputes, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Sikkim is resuming with improved infrastructure in 2025. Two acclimatization centres with medical facilities are being constructed at different elevations along the route. Local businesses anticipate economic revival as the Sikkim route via Nathula Pass welcomes pilgrims to Kailash Mansarovar.

"This yatra sustains our livelihoods. After five long years, we are finally seeing hope return," states Tashi Bhutia, a tour operator in Gangtok. Expectedly, the resumption will boost economic activity and tourism throughout Sikkim, creating numerous employment opportunities for residents as pilgrims return to this sacred route.

Key Insights

  • 2 acclimatisation centers are being established at 16th Mile (10,000 feet) and near Hangu Lake (14,000 feet) along Kupup Road
  • Since Sikkim has a conflict-free environment, it is highlighted as an advantage for pilgrims using the Nathu La border route
  • Each acclimatization centre will accommodate 50-60 yatris with medical facilities and essential amenities

News from the Archive

The governments of both countries, India and China, have announced the resumption of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra this year, probably in June. Infrastructure development and arrangements are actively underway to support pilgrims throughout the sacred journey. Significant infrastructure improvements are being implemented to meet tourist needs, including an acclimatization centre between Gangtok and Nathula Pass, which is being constructed. Each facility will feature two five-bedded and two two-bedded buildings, equipped with medical support, guides, kitchens, and other essential amenities. The supervisor indicated that all construction work would be completed within 4-5 days, as authorities have requested completion without further delay.

As per a recent publication in the Times of India, "Sikkim is a peaceful state, and this is the main USP of travelling via the Nathu La border," stated Kabi Lungchok MLA Thinley Tshering Bhutia, speaking in the presence of officials from the forest, tourism, and rural development departments. He emphasized that the Nathu La route for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, with its well-maintained roads, would once again provide pilgrims with a safe and enhanced travelling experience.

Furthermore, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), "This year, five batches, each consisting of 50 Yatris, and 10 batches, each consisting of 50 Yatris, are scheduled to travel through Uttarakhand State crossing over at Lipulekh Pass, and through Sikkim state crossing over at Nathu La Pass, respectively." Meanwhile, yatris who face physical difficulties can opt for the Kailash Mansarovar Aerial Darshan, a more convenient way than trekking for days. Also, yatris who opt for Kailash’s aerial darshan don’t require any passport or visa permits, all age groups and even physically incapable individuals are encouraged to travel in this way.
