Chardham Yatra 2026: New Transport Rules to End Long Queues at Check Posts

In a major relief for thousands of devotees planning the Chardham Yatra in 2026, the Uttarakhand Transport Department has announced a significant overhaul of transport regulations. The new measures are specifically designed to eliminate the notorious "long wait times" at entry check posts, ensuring a smoother transition into the mountainous regions of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.
The Big Change: Digital Efficiency at Checkpoints
To tackle the heavy traffic congestion that has historically plagued the Yatra routes, the state government is shifting toward a "Check-on-the-Go" model.
- Handheld Challan Tabs: RTO enforcement officers at major check posts will now be equipped with additional high-speed "Challan Tabs." This allows officers to board buses and passenger vehicles to conduct document verification internally, rather than making every vehicle halt for extended periods at a single window.
- Mobile Checking Camps: Special temporary checking camps will be established at various strategic points before the main uphill climbs. These camps will pre-verify vehicle fitness, Green Cards, and Trip Cards to prevent bottlenecks at the actual mountain gates
Mandatory "Green Cards" and "Trip Cards"
The department has reiterated that all passenger vehicles—including those for tourists just visiting the Garhwal region—must obtain a Green Card.
- Online Portal: Vehicle owners must register at greencard.uk.gov.in.
- Trip Cards: For every individual journey, a Trip Card containing the names, addresses, and mobile numbers of all passengers, as well as driver details, must be generated online.
- QR Code Integration: These cards will now feature enhanced QR codes that can be scanned instantly by mobile teams, reducing the verification time from minutes to seconds.
Safety First: Strict Guidelines for Hill Driving
While the focus is on speed, safety remains paramount. The 2026 guidelines include:
- No Night Driving: Commercial and private passenger vehicles are strictly prohibited from driving on hill tracks between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM.
- Hill Endorsement: Every driver must have a "Hill Endorsement" on their license, proving they are trained for high-altitude terrain.
- Vehicle Dimensions: To prevent jams on narrow bends, vehicles with a wheelbase exceeding 4225mm are restricted on certain sensitive routes.
How to Prepare
The Chardham Yatra is set to commence on April 19, 2026 (Akshaya Tritiya). Devotees are advised to complete their mandatory registration on the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app or the official portal to receive their Yatra E-Pass well in advance. Or you can contact Trip To Temples, to book your Chardham Package.
