The second Jyotirlinga can be found at Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple, also known as Srisailam Temple, located in Andhra Pradesh. Located on a hilltop near the Krishna river, this temple is where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati debated on which of their sons, Ganesha or Kartikeya, should marry first. In order to decide the first place, a competition was arranged between the two: the one who completed a trip around the world first would win. Lord Kartikeya wasted no time and started his journey on the peacock. Lord Ganesha, conversely, circled his parents declaring that they meant everything to him. It is believed that bypassing one's parents is as significant as circumnavigating the globe. Therefore, he cleverly outsmarted his brother and emerged victorious in the race. The happy parents arranged their son's marriage to Siddhi (spiritual powers) and Riddhi (prosperity). In certain myths, it is also said that Buddhi (intellect) is his spouse. Upon hearing this, Lord Kartikey was disturbed and made the decision to stay single. Yet, according to certain Tamil myths he is believed to have two wives. He departed to Mount Krounch and established his residence there. His parents came to visit him, resulting in a shrine for both of them - a linga for Shiva and a Shakti Peetha for Parvati. Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga is unique as it combines both a jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha, which are special shrines dedicated to Shakti Devi. There are only three of these temples in India. Legend has it that Lord Shiva took on the form of Arjuna on Amavasya and Goddess Parvati as Mallika on Poornima, thus giving the temple its name Mallikarjuna. Our tour package to Mallikarjun Jyotirlinga includes a visit to Malikarjun Temple, as well as Qutub Shahi Tomb and Golconda Fort.
