The mystical essence of Kashi, our eternal city of light, is rooted in the belief that it does not rest upon the earth but is perched securely upon the tip of Lord Shiva’s trident. According to the Kashi Khanda of the Skanda Purana, when the cosmos was shrouded in darkness, the first ray of creation manifested here as a blazing pillar of light, known as the Jyotirlinga. This infinite shaft of light pierced the three worlds, and it was in Kashi that Lord Shiva revealed his form to Brahma and Vishnu, establishing the city as the centre of the spiritual universe. For us, a dip in the holy Ganges at the Dashashwamedh Ghat is not just a ritual; it is a profound cleansing of the soul, believed to dissolve the karmas of a thousand lifetimes. The city is the foremost of the Sapta Puris, where the physical and metaphysical realms meet, and where death is not mourned but celebrated as Mahashmashana—the great cremation ground that grants Moksha, or liberation from the endless cycle of rebirth.

The heart of this pilgrimage beats at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, where the Lord resides as the 'Ruler of the Universe.' A beautiful mythological tradition tells us that while Shiva provides spiritual liberation, his consort, Maa Annapurna, the Goddess of Nourishment, resides right beside him. It is said that even Lord Shiva once stood before her with a begging bowl to seek alms, symbolising that while the soul seeks truth, the body requires sustenance; thus, it is a firm belief that no one ever goes hungry in the streets of Kashi. The spiritual journey then transitions from the Vedic to the Buddhist tradition at Sarnath, just a short distance away. It was here, in the quietude of the Deer Park, that Lord Buddha set the 'Wheel of Dharma' in motion by preaching his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. The towering Dhamekh Stupa marks the exact spot of this historical and spiritual turning point, making the region a unique confluence of two great faiths that both seek the ultimate truth of human existence.
