Varanasi is also known as Kashi, which means the City of Light. It is believed to be one of the oldest living cities in the world. Ancient Hindu scriptures refer to Kashi as Avimukta Kshetra, the sacred land that Lord Shiva never abandons. This belief is mentioned in texts like the Skanda Purana and the Shiva Purana. According to the Garuda Purana, a soul leaving the body in Kashi attains liberation. Shiva himself whispers the Taraka Mantra into the ears of the departing soul.
At the centre of Kashi stands the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Temple. This temple houses one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The Shiva Purana and Linga Purana describe this Jyotirlinga as the place where Shiva appeared as an endless pillar of divine light. Here, Shiva is worshipped as Vishwanath, the Lord of the Universe. A single darshan is believed to dissolve accumulated karmas of many lifetimes.
Flowing along the city is the holy river Ganga and bathing in its water is believed to purify the body and the soul. The ghats of Varanasi silently witness life and death together. At Manikarnika and Harishchandra Ghats, the final rites continue day and night. Scriptures describe Kashi as the only place where death itself becomes a sacred passage. It is believed that cremation here grants immediate liberation.
As evening approaches, the ghats come alive during the Ganga Aarti. Hundreds of lamps rise together. Mantras fill the air. The river reflects devotion like a moving prayer.
From Kashi, the journey leads to Gaya, which is deeply connected with ancestral rituals. According to the Vayu Purana and Garuda Purana, Gaya holds the divine power to liberate ancestors. According to belief, Lord Vishnu granted this land the power to free departed souls. That is why Pind Daan performed here holds immense importance.
On the banks of the Phalgu River, devotees offer pindas for their ancestors. Seven generations are said to attain liberation through it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Varanasi Pilgrimage Tour with Gaya – Kashi Vishwanath, Gaya Pind Daan & Bodh Gaya
Is it possible for me to go to the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya on this trip?
Yes, for sure. Day 4 of the trip is all about Bodh Gaya, the place where Lord Buddha became enlightened. You will have plenty of time to see the Mahabodhi Temple (a UNESCO World Heritage site), the holy Bodhi Tree, the Great Buddha Statue (80 feet tall) and other international monasteries.
Are all meals included? What kinds of food can I expect?
Most of the time, the package includes breakfast and dinner at your hotel every day. Because the pilgrimage is spiritual, all of the food served is strictly vegetarian. People know Varanasi for its Satvik food and street food like Kachori-Sabzi and Lassi. The package doesn't include lunch, but our drivers can suggest clean, well-known vegetarian restaurants for you to eat at while you're sightseeing.
What does the "Taraka Mantra" mean in the Kashi scriptures?
The Garuda Purana says that Varanasi is the holy land of Moksha or freedom. People think that when someone dies in Kashi, Lord Shiva whispers the Taraka Mantra into their ear, which frees the soul from the cycle of rebirth right away. This is why the Manikarnika and Harishchandra Ghats are thought to be the most sacred places for last rites.
Does Trip To Temples help with the Pind Daan ceremonies in Gaya?
Yes. Pind Daan for ancestors is a very important and personal ritual. We help you get to the Phalgu River and find priests who can lead the ceremony according to Vedic traditions by coordinating and guiding you on the ground. Please keep in mind that the tour package does not include the costs of samagri (ritual items) and dakshina (offerings to priests). We will help with the logistics.
How much walking will there be on the tour of Varanasi and Gaya?
This tour is meant to be slow and easy for older people. Private air-conditioned cars are used for most major transfers. But the roads in Varanasi that lead to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the ghats are narrow and only for pedestrians. You should plan on walking about 1 to 2 kilometres every day at a slow pace. E-rickshaws are often available for people who can't walk very far to get to the ghats.
When is the best time of year to make this pilgrimage?
The temples in Kashi and Bodh Gaya are open all year, but the best time to visit is from October to March. The weather is nice during these months, with temperatures between 10°C and 25°C. This is the best time for temple darshans and rituals at the ghats. From April to June, summers can be very hot, with temperatures often going over 40°C. From July to September, the monsoon season brings a lot of humidity.
