People in Karnataka have long thought of the coastal belt as Parashurama Kshetra. The Sahyadri Khanda of the Skanda Purana says that Lord Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, threw his axe from the Western Ghats to bring this land back from the sea. The story of the Atma Linga at Gokarna is what makes this "Land of Seven Mukti Sthalas" so special. According to mythology, the demon king Ravana did a lot of penance to get the Atma Linga from Lord Shiva so he could live forever. When Ravana was on his way to Lanka, Lord Ganesha tricked him into putting the Linga on the ground at Gokarna by pretending to be a cowherd. Ravana was very strong, but he couldn't pull it up. In his anger, he broke up parts of the divine Linga. The cloth that covered the Linga fell at Murudeshwara, making it a place of great cosmic power. The main stays are at Gokarna, where the Mahabaleshwar Temple is located.

The spiritual importance of Udupi is based on the devotion of the 13th-century saint Madhvacharya. People say that Vishwakarma made the idol of Lord Krishna at the Udupi Matha and that Rukmini worshipped it in Dwarka. A merchant ship carried the idol, which was wrapped in Gopi Chandana. Madhvacharya used his spiritual powers to save the ship from a storm. The Kanakana Kindi, a window with nine holes, is a one-of-a-kind feature here. According to legend, Kanakadasa, a devotee from a low caste, was not allowed into the temple. The idol of Lord Krishna turned around and broke the wall to show Kanakadasa his Darshan, showing the world that true devotion knows no social boundaries.
