- Shitala Ghat of Kashi
Shitala Ghat of Kashi
Shitala Ghat is one of the oldest and most spiritually significant ghats in Kashi, standing just beside the bustling Dashashwamedh Ghat along the sacred Ganges. It takes its name from the ancient temple of Shitala Devi located here, a goddess worshipped as the protector against diseases, particularly smallpox and pox-related ailments, and revered as a bringer of coolness, healing, and relief. Pilgrims visit the shrine seeking blessings for health and protection for their families, often combining their prayers with a holy dip in the river. Despite sitting close to one of Varanasi's busiest ghats, Shitala Ghat retains a quieter, more intimate atmosphere, offering devotees a serene space for worship. As both a healing shrine and a riverside sanctuary, Shitala Ghat reflects the layered spiritual traditions that make Kashi one of the most sacred cities in the world.
