- Kal Bhairav, Kotwal of Kashi
Kal Bhairav, Kotwal of Kashi
Lord Kal Bhairav is a fierce and powerful manifestation of Lord Shiva, embodying the forces of time (Kal), destruction, and divine justice. According to Hindu mythology, Kal Bhairav emerged from Shiva's wrath to punish Lord Brahma for his arrogance, and he continues to be worshipped as the guardian deity who protects devotees while holding them accountable for their actions. Often depicted with fierce eyes, matted hair, and accompanied by a dog as his vahana, Kal Bhairav is regarded as the Kotwal, or chief protector, of sacred cities like Kashi, where devotees believe his blessings must be sought before undertaking any pilgrimage. Worshipped with offerings of black sesame, mustard oil, and alcohol in certain traditions, Lord Kal Bhairav represents the balance between fear and protection, reminding devotees that true spiritual progress requires confronting and transcending one's own darkness under his watchful, unwavering gaze.
