- Manikarnika Ghat, Kashi
Manikarnika Ghat, Kashi
Manikarnika Ghat is one of the oldest and most sacred cremation grounds in Hinduism, located along the banks of the Ganges in the holy city of Kashi. According to legend, this is the spot where Lord Shiva's earring (manikarnika) fell, giving the ghat its name and eternal sanctity. Hindus believe that being cremated here grants the soul moksha, liberation from the cycle of birth and death, making it a profoundly significant site for both the living and the departed. Sacred fires are said to have burned continuously here for centuries, tended by generations of the Dom community who perform the last rites. While solemn and deeply spiritual, Manikarnika Ghat offers a rare and humbling window into the Hindu philosophy of life, death, and liberation, standing as a powerful testament to Kashi's timeless relationship with the eternal cycle of existence.
