Kal Bhairav, the Guard of Kashi

Kal Bhairav is revered as the divine guardian of Kashi, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva entrusted with protecting the sacred city and maintaining cosmic order within it. Known as the Kotwal, or chief guardian, of Kashi, he is believed to watch over every pilgrim and resident, and local tradition holds that no journey through the holy city is complete, nor truly safe, without first seeking his blessings. Depicted with a fierce countenance, often accompanied by a dog as his vahana (vehicle), Kal Bhairav embodies both protection and justice, punishing wrongdoing while shielding the devoted. His presence looms large in the spiritual fabric of Kashi, reminding all who walk its ancient lanes that this holy city, and everyone in it, remains under his ever-watchful guard.
