Spiritual Significance of Ghandruk & Annapurna Basecamp

Ghandruk, a Gurung village located at an elevation of approximately 1,940 meters, is the place to experience the spiritual side of the Annapurna region. Hinduism and Buddhism flourish side by side in this area, co-existing with the prehistoric Bon beliefs of the local Gurung people, which are reflected in the local village shrines, prayer flags, and the practices of the village priests.

The mountain range of the Annapurna takes its name from the Hindu goddess of fertility, Annapurna, an aspect of Parvati; therefore, the region is considered to be sacred ground by many Hindu pilgrims, who visit the area in order to catch a glimpse of the deity.

To the west of the village lies the Machapuchare (Fishtail) peak, which is also the home of Lord Shiva in local folklore. This peak has been closed to climbing since the late 1950s; it is considered to be a pilgrimage site for Hindu pilgrims. Annapurna Base Camp, located at around 4,130 meters in the Annapurna Sanctuary, is a region of spectacular high mountains, which can be viewed from a distance after spending several days hiking in the area. You will get a chance to walk around the local prayer walls in a clockwise direction and ask for permission to take photos of a related sacred site.
