The name Somnath tells a beautiful story of forgiveness: "Som" is the Moon, and "Nath" is the Lord. Legend says Chandra Dev (the Moon God) was cursed by his father-in-law, Daksha, to lose his glow. As the world went dark, the Moon came to this very spot—Prabhas Patan—where the Saraswati, Hiranya and Kapila rivers meet. He chanted the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra with such devotion that Lord Shiva appeared and partially broke the curse, allowing the Moon to wax and wane.
In gratitude, the Moon built the first golden temple here. This cycle of the moon—fading and then regaining its light—is mirrored in the temple’s history. Despite being destroyed multiple times by invaders, the temple has always been rebuilt, stronger than before. To stand at Somnath today, watching the sun set over the horizon as the temple bells ring, is to understand that Sanatan Dharma is as timeless as the sea itself.
Another interesting historical significance of this tour is Bhalka Tirth. It’s the place where Lord Krishna departed for Vaikunth after his clan, the Yadavas, were destroyed by a family curse. The story is that Lord Krishna was resting under a Peepal tree in the forest. A hunter named Jara saw Krishna’s foot moving through the bushes and, mistaking it for a deer, fired a poisoned arrow. When the hunter realized he’d struck the Lord, he was heartbroken, but Krishna comforted him. He explained that this wasn't an accident—it was a karmic debt being settled from a previous life when Krishna (as Rama) had killed Jara (as Bali). It’s a powerful story of forgiveness and the closing of a divine circle. hame
