The Shiva Purana tells us a real story linked to this place. It’s about a mother named Ghushma and her incredible faith. It’s a story about staying devoted even when life gets hard.
Ghushma was a devotee of Lord Shiva. Every single day, she would craft 101 small clay Lingas, offer her prayers, and release them into a nearby lake. It was her anchor. But things took a dark turn. Out of pure jealousy, her own sister killed Ghushma’s only son and threw him into that very same lake.

The next morning, the household was in a panic. But Ghushma? She didn’t stop her ritual. That’s a very shocking thing easily found in all devotees. She didn't even cry. She just finished her prayers at the water’s edge. As she turned to leave, her son simply walked out of the lake, completely unharmed. When Lord Shiva appeared, ready to punish the sister, Ghushma did something incredible. She asked for mercy. She chose forgiveness over revenge. That’s why people say the air here feels "softer." The temple, also celebrated in the Padma Purana and Skanda Purana, is literally built on a foundation of compassion.

The building itself matches this vibe. It’s made of red volcanic rock with carvings that don't try too hard to impress you. It’s sturdy and quiet. Then you have the Ellora Caves right next door. Standing inside those massive rock-cut halls after your Darshan makes the whole journey feel like a bridge between ancient art and a very personal kind of peace.
