While Ayodhya is the Janmabhoomi of Prabhu Shri Ram, Bihar holds the heart of the Ramayana through Mata Sita. This trail isn't just about visiting temples; it’s about retracing the life of the "Daughter of Earth".
The story of Sitamarhi is one of the most touching chapters in Hindu history. Centuries ago, the kingdom of Mithila was suffering from a terrible, bone-dry drought. To please the gods, the philosopher-king Raja Janak was advised to perform a ritual by ploughing the fields himself. As he guided his golden plough through the parched earth at what is now Punaura Dham, the tip (Hal) struck a hard metal pitcher buried deep in the soil. Inside, to everyone's amazement, lay a radiant infant girl. He named her Sita, which literally means "the furrow left by a plough." This miracle not only brought rain to the kingdom but also gave the world the divine Janaki. Today, visiting the Janaki Temple and Punaura Dham feels less like sightseeing and more like visiting a daughter’s childhood home—it's a place where the earth itself is worshipped as a mother.
As we move into Darbhanga, we enter the heart of Mithila’s ancient lore. This region is home to the sacred Ahilya Asthan, a place that captures one of the most beautiful moments of the Ramayana. Legend says that Sage Gautama’s wife, Ahilya, had been turned into a stone by a curse and had been waiting for ages in the dust. It was only when Lord Rama passed through this land on his way to Janakpur that his divine touch brought her back to life. Standing at this site today, you can almost feel the weight of that history—it’s a powerful reminder of redemption and the grace that the Lord brought to the soil of Bihar.
Finally, it is Patna, which many forget was once the legendary Pataliputra—the center of the ancient world. Standing on the banks of the holy Ganga, Patna acts as the vital bridge between the spiritual traditions of Mithila and the historical power of Magadh. It has witnessed the rise of empires and the footsteps of great saints. For a pilgrim, Patna isn't just a transit point; it is a sacred gateway. As you stand by the river for the evening Aarti, you are standing where sages have meditated for millennia, watching the same Ganga that witnessed the journeys of the Ramayana. It is the perfect place to begin your pilgrimage, grounding yourself in the ancient wisdom of a land that has seen the birth of gods and the rise of civilisations.

Overview
Retrace the divine footsteps of the Treta Yuga with this 6-day spiritual odyssey through Bihar, the land where the Ramayana truly breathes. Thoughtfully designed by the Trip To Temples team, this journey takes you from the historic banks of the Ganga in Patna to the sacred soil of Sitamarhi—where Mata Sita first appeared to King Janak—and the ancient, storied grounds of Darbhanga.
The best time to plan this pilgrimage is between October and March, when the Bihar plains are pleasantly cool (12°C to 25°C). While the summer months (April–June) can be quite hot (30°C to 42°C), visiting during the festival of Vivah Panchami offers a spiritual vibe that is hard to match. With our dedicated TTT ground support and private vehicles, we ensure your yatra is smooth and meditative, allowing you to immerse yourself in the stories of Mithila.
