The story of Sitamarhi is one of the most touching chapters in Hindu history. Centuries ago, the kingdom of Mithila was suffering from a terrible, bone-dry drought. To please the gods, the philosopher-king Raja Janak was advised to perform a ritual by ploughing the fields himself. As he guided his golden plough through the parched earth at what is now Punaura Dham, the tip (Hal) struck a hard metal pitcher buried deep in the soil. Inside, to everyone's amazement, lay a radiant infant girl. He named her Sita, which literally means "the furrow left by a plough." This miracle not only brought rain to the kingdom but also gave the world the divine Janaki. Today, visiting the Janaki Temple and Punaura Dham feels less like sightseeing and more like visiting a daughter’s childhood home—it's a place where the earth itself is worshipped as a mother.

As we move into Darbhanga, we enter the heart of Mithila’s ancient lore. This region is home to the sacred Ahilya Asthan, a place that captures one of the most beautiful moments of the Ramayana. Legend says that Sage Gautama’s wife, Ahilya, had been turned into a stone by a curse and had been waiting for ages in the dust. After breakfast, we dive straight into the heart of Patna. It’s a busy day with a lot to see. We’ll visit Takht Sri Patna Sahib, one of the five holy Panj Takhts, and the peaceful ISKCON Temple. We’ve also lined up stops at the Buddha Smriti Park, the famous Mahavir Mandir, and the ancient Patan Devi Temple. You’ll see the iconic Gol Ghar and dive into history at the Patna Museum and Pataliputra Teerth. It’s a long day, but it covers the very best of the city’s spiritual and historic soul.

We leave Patna after breakfast for the drive to Darbhanga. It’s about 139 km, which usually takes us around three and a half hours. Once we arrive and check you into the hotel, the rest of the day is yours. Darbhanga has a very different, slower energy compared to Patna. You can use this free time to relax or explore the local area before we get into the main sightseeing tomorrow.

We’ll check out of the hotel after breakfast and head toward Sitamarhi. It’s a shorter drive today, about 75 km, taking roughly two hours. Sitamarhi is widely regarded as the birthplace of Mata Sita, and the vibe here is incredibly devotional. We’ll visit the Janaki Temple and Haleshwar Sthan later in the day. It’s a beautiful way to spend your final full day on this circuit.
