Diwali of the Gods in Kashi

According to belief, there is one night when the gods themselves come down to Kashi to take a dip in the Ganges, and the city responds by lighting up every single ghat to welcome them. This is Dev Deepawali, often called the Diwali of the gods, celebrated fifteen days after the regular Diwali on the full moon of Kartik. The story goes back to Lord Shiva's victory over the demon Tripurasura, and locals mark the occasion by placing rows of earthen lamps along the steps of every ghat from Assi to Rajghat. As dusk falls, priests perform an elaborate Ganga Aarti with fire, bells, and chants, and once it ends, the lamps are lit together so that the entire riverfront seems to glow at once. Pilgrims and travelers alike come to witness this, some standing on the ghats and others taking a boat out to see the full sweep of lights from the middle of the river. It is a night where mythology, devotion, and sheer visual beauty come together in a way that is hard to find anywhere else.
