Amarnath Yatra 2025 Gets Suspended Due to Heavy Rainfall and Landslides

The Amarnath Yatra 2025 has been suspended on Thursday morning following continuous torrential rainfall over the past 36 hours, which has created hazardous conditions along the pilgrimage routes. The suspension affects the twin route, the Baltal and Pahalgam routes, marking the first interruption of the yatra since its commencement on July 3. The decision to suspend the Amarnath Yatra came after a fatal incident on Wednesday when landslides struck the Baltal route in Ganderbal district. The latest Amarnath Yatra news is that a female pilgrim lost her life, while three other pilgrims sustained injuries in the landslide rescue operations. The meteorological department had issued warnings of heavy rainfall across parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Vijay Kumar Bhiduri announced the suspension in the Mint report, stating, "Shri Amarnathji Yatra has been suspended for 17.07.2025 from both Pahalgam and Baltal base camps. Continuous heavy rains over the last two days have necessitated restoration work to be carried out on tracks along both routes."
Authorities have initiated comprehensive rescue operations for pilgrims currently stationed at various camps. Bhiduri confirmed that pilgrims who stayed at the Panjtami camp on Tuesday are being safely evacuated to Baltal with appropriate assistance. "However, yatris who stayed at Panjtami camp last night are being allowed to proceed down to Baltal with adequate deployment of BRO and Mountain Rescue Teams," he stated.
Restoration efforts are underway with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) having deployed extensive manpower and machinery along the affected tracks to expedite restoration work. Officials are working around the clock to ensure the pilgrimage routes are safe for the resumption of the Amarnath pilgrimage in 2025.
According to the Amarnath 2025 weather update, restoration work is progressing despite challenging conditions. Commissioner Bhiduri expressed cautious optimism regarding the resumption, stating, "In all likelihood, the yatra shall resume tomorrow (Friday), depending on the weather conditions during the day."
The Amarnath Yatra 2025 was inaugurated with a flag-off ceremony by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. Since its commencement on July 3, more than 2.35 lakh pilgrims have successfully paid reverence at the 3,880-meter-high shrine. The 38-day pilgrimage to the Amarnath yatra is scheduled to conclude on August 9, 2025.
This marks the first time during the current pilgrimage season that the Amarnath Yatra has been suspended due to adverse weather conditions. Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions closely and urge pilgrims to remain patient as restoration work progresses along both routes to ensure safe passage for the continuation of this sacred journey. The status of Amarnath Yatra 2025 will be updated once clarification comes from the authorities.
