The Kinnaur Kailash Yatra has been postponed until further notice after the Kinnaur district administration discovered several safety hazards along the famous pilgrimage route. The route is risky for devotees due to unstable glaciers, frequent rockfalls, and a higher risk of landslides, according to a careful examination that resulted in the decision. Every year, thousands of devotees travel to Kinnaur Kailash, one of the most important spiritual sites in Himachal Pradesh. However, authorities have determined that until the weather improves and the route can be considered secure, public safety must continue to be the top concern.
A specially assembled inquiry team conducted a thorough field survey before the administration made its decision. Following a high-level review meeting led by Revenue, Horticulture, Tribal Development, and Public Grievance Redressal Minister Jagat Singh Negi, the inspection was conducted. The Forest Department and local authorities oversaw the survey, which evaluated the trekking route's current state and found a number of high-risk areas. According to the inspection findings, the stretch between Milling Khata and the Shivling has become particularly dangerous due to unstable glaciers and loose rocks positioned above the trekking trail. Significant rockfall activity was also noted by officials between the holy cave and Sorang, with falling boulders and debris partially obstructing many sections of the path.
Authorities reported that the region's snow and glacier melting have intensified due to the recent temperature increase. This has made mountain slopes even weaker, making unexpected landslides and rockfalls more likely. The road from Milling Khata to the holy cave has been deemed extremely dangerous for travel based on the assessment. According to officials, permitting the Kinnaur Kailash Yatra to continue in these conditions could put pilgrims and emergency response personnel at needless risk. As a result, the pilgrimage has been halted until a new inspection verifies that the path is secure for public use.
Devotees have been advised by Deputy Commissioner Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma to obey the administration's advice and avoid making the journey until more information is available. He highlighted that an emergency halt has only been put in place to protect pilgrims' lives and guarantee that the yatra won't restart until circumstances improve. The authorities have promised devotees that the route will be continuously monitored. Before announcing new dates for the Kinnaur Kailash Yatra, a new assessment will be carried out once the weather has stabilized and the hiking trail has been restored to a safe state. Until the suspension is lifted, pilgrims are encouraged to stay away from the area and rely solely on official reports.
