Char Dham Yatra by Road
The four sacred sites of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath located in the majestic Himalayas are collectively referred to as Chota Chardham. These religious travel destinations in Northern India are highly popular among pilgrims and draw in a large number of visitors annually. The pilgrimage typically progresses eastward from the west. Therefore, the Char Dham Yatra commences at Yamunotri, proceeds to Gangotri, Kedarnath, and concludes at Badrinath. Each site is specifically devoted to a different deity.Yamunotri is dedicated to the Goddess Yamuna, considered to be the daughter of the Sun and the twin sister of Yama, who is the God of death. Being in the top echelons of the divine in Hindu mythology, it is thought that bathing in Yamuna's waters can purify all sins and protect the worshipper from meeting an early demise. Gangotri is a revered Hindu destination dedicated to the Goddess Ganga, known as the holiest and most pristine river in India. The shrine is located by the River Bhagirathi, also known as the Ganga, named after King Bhagirath's penance that brought her from heaven. Kedarnath, situated close to the source of the Mandakini River, is not just one of the Chota Char Dham but also the most northern Jyotirlinga. It is a component of the Panch Kedar as well. Kedarnath was known as ‘Kedar Khand’ in ancient times. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kedarnath is situated at 3,580 metres near the Chorabari glacier, the origin of the Mandakini river, and is surrounded by the Kedarnath peak, Kedar Dome, and other Himalayan peaks. Badrinath is situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River, where Lord Vishnu is revered. In ancient mythology, it is believed that Lord Vishnu performed meditation in this very place, alongside his wife sheltering him by taking a form of Badri tree to protect him from harsh weather and winter moved by the action of his consort Lord Vishnu named the place Badrikashram.
