The story of Badrinath Dham is a beautiful example of how even the Divine must do penance to keep the universe in balance. The Skanda Purana says that this holy place, which is between the Nar and Narayana mountain ranges, is so holy that no other pilgrimage can match its merit. The "Badri" or Jujube tree is the mythological heart of Badrinath. According to legend, Lord Vishnu sat in deep, uninterrupted meditation on these freezing high-altitude peaks, where he was completely exposed to the elements. Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a huge Badri tree to protect her Lord from the harsh Himalayan winds and hot sun. She spread her branches to give him shade and protection. When Vishnu finally woke up from his trance, he was very moved by her silent sacrifice. He said that from then on, her name would always come before his at this site. This is why he is worshipped here as Badrinath, the Lord of the Badri tree.
The temple we see today is thought to have been built in its current spiritual form by the great philosopher Adi Shankara in the 8th century. People say that he found the meditative idol of Lord Badrinarayan, which was carved out of black Shaligram stone, at the bottom of the Narad Kund and put it in a cave near the hot springs of Tapt Kund. Over the years, the temple changed into a lively example of Pahari architecture. Its brightly painted facade stood out against the white snow on the Neelkanth peak.
The Panch Prayags make the journey even more important spiritually. These are the five holy places where different glacial rivers come together to form the Ganga. From Vishnuprayag (where the Alaknanda meets the Dhauliganga) to Devprayag (where the Alaknanda finally joins the Bhagirathi), each confluence is a step in the process of purification. Badrinath is the best "Satya Yuga" destination for a pilgrim. The Alaknanda River literally washes the Lord's feet, and the silence of the Himalayas is like the deep, internal stillness that the Lord practiced under the Badri tree.
