The temples in Gujarat's magical kingdom are so beautiful that legends say even the gods were moved by how beautiful they were. The Somnath Temple, the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas, is at the center of this spiritual landscape. It stands for the eternal light of Lord Shiva.
The Puranas say that its history is a cycle of heavenly creation: the Moon God built it out of gold to reflect divine light, the demon king Ravana rebuilt it out of silver, the Pandavas rebuilt it out of stone, and finally Lord Krishna himself rebuilt it out of sacred wood. The "Shrine Eternal" was rebuilt every time it was invaded and destroyed by rulers like Mahmud Ghazni. The last time it was rebuilt was in 1951. It is still a strong symbol of India's strength and the unbreakable spirit of faith.
The Triveni Sangam is a holy place where the Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati rivers meet the Arabian Sea. It is thought to be where Lord Krishna ended his earthly journey, marking the start of the Kali Yuga.
Dwarka, the golden city, is on the western shore, where the sea meets the land. The Dwarkadhish Temple, also known as the Jagat Mandir, is the grand center of this ancient kingdom. It was built on the spot where Lord Krishna once ruled as king. The temple's limestone walls and 72 pillars tell stories of how the Lord was friends with Sudama when he was a child and how devoted his followers were.
The island of Bet Dwarka, which can only be reached by boat, is part of this spiritual circuit. It is thought to be the original home of the Yadav royal family. The strong Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, also known as the "Lord of Snakes," protects the journey. The Shiva Purana says that he protects the good.
These places make up a spiritual journey that lasts four nights and five days, where history, devotion, and beautiful buildings come together. The best time to go on this pilgrimage is between October and March, when temperatures stay between 12°C and 28°C. Travellers should be ready to walk a lot across large temple complexes and sandy beaches.

Frequently Asked Questions about
Gujarat Spiritual Pilgrimage: Somnath & Dwarka
Is it possible to change the return trip on the last day?
The standard itinerary ends with a drive back to Rajkot Airport or Railway Station, but travellers can also board a train directly from Somnath Railway Station if that fits better with their departure schedule.
What other historical sites are included besides the temples?
Day 3 of the trip from Dwarka to Somnath stops in Porbandar, which is where Mahatma Gandhi was born. You will go to the Sudama Temple, the Tara Mandir planetarium and Kirti Mandir, which is where Gandhi's family lived.
Are there stops at Jyotirlingas on the schedule?
Yes, this pilgrimage includes two very important Jyotirlingas: the Somnath Temple (the first of the twelve) and the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, which is close to Dwarka. Both are big parts of the trip that lasts four nights and five days.
How do we get to Bet Dwarka Island?
You can get to Bet Dwarka by taking a ferry from the Okha jetty. The boat ride gives you a great view of the Arabian Sea and is a big spiritual highlight of the second day of the trip.
Are there any rules about what to wear or what to do for safety at the temples?
Yes. Most of the big temples in this area have a simple dress code (traditional Indian clothes are best). For safety reasons, you can't bring mobile phones, cameras or leather goods (belts, wallets) into the inner sanctums of Somnath and Dwarkadhish.
Is this tour physically hard?
Walking is a big part of the tour. Most temple complexes, like Dwarkadhish and Somnath, are huge and have stone paths and stairs that you have to walk on. Also, you have to take a ferry to get to Bet Dwarka, which may require some physical effort.
When is the best time of year to go on the Gujarat Pilgrimage Tour?
The best time to go is from October to March. The weather is nice during these months, with temperatures between 12°C and 28°C. This makes it easy to walk around the temple complexes and see the sights outside.
