Mahanavmi, the 9th day of the Navratri, marks Maa Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura, due to which she’s worshipped as ‘Mahishasurmardini’. On Durga Navami, people end their 9-day Navratri fasting by offering Navratri bhog, chunari, and shringar to Maa Durga, seeking her blessings. Since early morning, millions of devotees visit Shaktipeeth temples and other shrines of Maa Durga to offer her prasadam.

Kanjak Puja

Out of all nine auspicious days, the ninth day of Navaratri is dedicated to Maa Siddhidatri, who embodies the supreme knowledge and grants siddhis and wisdom to her devotees. Many people ask, is Kanjak Pujan on Ashtami or Navami? Well, both days are believed to be auspicious for Kanjak Pujan. However, only Rahu Kaal should be avoided for Kanjak Pujan.

In several parts of North India, Kanjak Pujan, also called Kumari Pujan or Kanya Pujan, is observed either on Durga ashtami or navami. 9 kanyas, who are believed to be a symbol of feminine power, are invited to homes and offered prasadam. This tradition is believed to bring immense growth, happiness, and abundance to a household with the blessings of Maa Durga.

  1. Before kanya pujan, perform Gauri Maiya’s aarti, and chant her mantras:

“सर्व मंगल मांगल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थ साधिके। शरन्ये त्रयम्बिके गौरी नारायणी नमोस्तुते।।”

  1. Wash the feet of the Kanjaks and apply a tilak

  2. Tie a kalawa and offer a coloured chunari to the nine girls

  3. Give them gifts, money, notebooks, and other valuable things
