Kurukshetra & Its Spiritual Significance
Kurukshetra is more than just a place where a famous battle took place; it is the very womb of the universe and the place where the laws of righteousness were written into the human soul. The Vamana Purana says that Lord Brahma chose this land to make the universe, which is why it is called Dharmakshetra. The name comes from King Kuru, an ancestor of the Pandavas, who ploughed this land with a golden plough and asked for a boon that anyone who died here while doing their duty would go to heaven. This legacy of "Righteous Action" led to the Great War and the delivery of the Bhagavad Gita.
The Sri Devikoop Bhadrakali Temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peeths, is hidden among these warriors and sages. According to mythology, when Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to calm Lord Shiva's grief, the right knee of Goddess Sati fell into a holy well (Devikoop) here. In the past, this temple was a safe place for the Pandavas. It is said that Lord Krishna brought Arjuna and his brothers here the night before the battle to ask Bhadrakali for her blessings. They went back after winning to give the Goddess their horses as a thank you. This old event has turned into a lovely living tradition. Today, devotees give thousands of tiny clay and silver horses as gifts, which are meant to represent the Pandavas' chariots and ask the Goddess to guide their lives toward success.
Jyotisar, the "Source of Light," is the highest point of the spiritual journey. In the middle of a battlefield, Lord Krishna stood as the Divine Charioteer and gave the hesitant Arjuna the heavenly song, the Bhagavad Gita. Today, an old banyan tree stands at the spot. It is thought to be a branch of the original tree that saw the conversation. Standing under its shade makes you feel the weight of five thousand years of knowledge. People say that even though empires have come and gone, the silence at Jyotisar still echoes with the Lord's words: "Change is the law of the universe." This makes Kurukshetra a place where the mortal mind finally meets the eternal truth.
