The mythological origins of the Panch Bhoota Stalam are woven into the sacred bond between Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, representing her journey to master the material world to reunite with the Divine. Each temple is a chapter in this cosmic story, where the Goddess performed rigorous Tapasya (penance) to appease the Lord, teaching us that the five elements are but different forms of one supreme consciousness.
At Kanchipuram, the story begins with Parvati worshipping a Lingam she meticulously crafted from the riverbank's sand. To test the depth of her devotion, Shiva caused the neighboring river to overflow. As the swirling waters threatened to dissolve her sand Lingam, Parvati did not flee; instead, she embraced it with such intensity that the Lord's form was imprinted with the marks of her bangles and kuncham. Touched by her physical sacrifice, Shiva appeared from the Prithvi Lingam (Earth), signifying that true faith is as grounded and unshakeable as the soil.
Moving to Tiruvanaikaval, we find the story of the Appu Lingam (Water). Here, Parvati, in the form of Akhilandeshwari, performed penance in the "Jambu Forest." She created a Lingam from the waters of the Kaveri river, which remained miraculously solid yet fluid. This site also tells of an elephant and a spider who vied to worship the Lord; the elephant brought water in its trunk, while the spider wove a web to protect the Lingam from falling leaves. Shiva granted them both liberation, showing that the flow of grace is available to all.
The narrative shifts to the fiery peaks of Tiruvannamalai, the site of the Arunachaleshwar (Fire) temple. According to Hindu scriptures, this is where the cosmic ego was shattered. When Brahma and Vishnu argued over their supremacy, Shiva manifested as an "Annamalai"—a pillar of fire with no beginning or end. Brahma took the form of a swan to find the top and Vishnu became a boar to find the root, but both failed. This fire represents the light of Jnana (knowledge) that burns away the darkness of ignorance.
In the quiet sanctum of Srikalahasti, the Vayu Lingam (Air) represents the subtle breath. The story follows a spider (Sri), a snake (Kala) and an elephant (Hasti) who worshipped the Lord in their own ways. The spider wove a canopy, the snake placed gems and the elephant washed the Lingam. Their selfless breath of devotion is immortalised in the flickering lamp of the temple, which moves even in a windowless room.
Finally, at Chidambaram, we reach the Akasha Lingam (Sky). Here, the Lord is not an idol but the "Chidambara Rahasya"—the secret of the void. He performs the Ananda Tandava (Dance of Bliss) in the golden hall, symbolising that the ultimate reality is the vast, formless space within our own hearts, where the soul finally finds its true home.
