Lord Kubera, known as the God of Wealth, prosperity and the king of the Yakshas, was once a mortal, but his life took an exceptional turn through faith and destiny. He is also known as Kuvera, Kuber or Kuberan.
Once, Kubera was mortal, but one day, in search of food, he entered a Shiva temple where he lit the fading temple diya with a piece of his own cloth, an act that unknowingly changed his destiny forever.
Lord Shiva granted him rebirth as a result of his selfless act. The origin of the Kubera God of Wealth began when he was reborn as a great leader named Damana and then as Kubera. He lived a life of dedication and integrity.
Kubera, known as the treasurer of the gods, has no bounds. But pride crept into his heart. As he wanted to show his glory, he invited Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati for a lavish feast, but was unaware of the divine lesson awaiting him.
Lord Shiva sensed the arrogance of Kuber, so he declined the invitation and sent Lord Ganesha instead. Ganesh arrived at Lord Kubera's place, was unaware of the pride behind his invitation, but ready to teach Kubera the real meaning of wealth.
At the feast, Ganesha began eating endlessly. He ate hungrily of every dish, every grain, and then the stored palace food. As Kubera watched helplessly, he realised that his earthly wealth couldn’t satisfy the hunger of Ganesha.
Kubera panicked and rushed to Lord Shiva for help. Then, Shiva gave him a handful of roasted rice and said, "Offer this to Ganesha with humility, not pride." At that moment, Lord Kubera realised his mistake.
When Kubera offered the rice with a humble heart, Ganesha’s hunger vanished instantly, and he smiled, blessing him. Kubera realised that true wealth is not gold, luxury or jewels, it’s devotion and sincerity.
From that day, Kubera was transformed, his pride replaced by humility. As the God of wealth, he began blessing others not just with wealth but with gratitude and wisdom. This is how Kubera became the God of Wealth.
