Dhanteras, also referred to as Dhantrayodashi, is observed during the month of Kartik, on Trayodashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha, just a few days before Diwali.
Lord Dhanvantari (an avatar of Vishnu), the Deity who governs Ayurveda and health, is also believed to be a physician who emerged during Samudra Manthan with a Kalash of Amrit (nectar of immortality), symbolising the day of Dhanteras as a celebration of health and wellness.
Dhanteras marks the onset of Diwali preparations and celebrations, signifying the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi, the giver of prosperity and fulfilment. It is considered the most auspicious period to buy gold, silver, vehicles and other valuables to manifest abundance and prosperity in life. Moreover, on Dhanteras, prayers are offered to Maa Lakshmi and Lord Kubera, the deities of wealth, who are worshipped for good fortune & financial growth.
Dhanteras is celebrated as ‘Lakshmi Puja’ all across India, and devotees light diyas and candles on the eve of Dhanteras, which heralds auspiciousness and the welcoming of Maa Lakshmi. On this day, gold and silver are purchased to attract growth in life.
Many believe that Dhanteras is only the festival of wealth, good luck, and renewal; however, it also has a connection with the God of health, healing, longevity, and wellness. Lord Dhanvantari, the father of Ayurveda and the physician of the Gods, is worshipped for vitality, fitness, and strength.
To please Lord Dhanvantari, puja vidhi involves cleaning your house properly and decluttering before Dhanteras puja, to remove negativity and welcome Maa Lakshmi by decorating the house entrance with diyas. Devotees offer prayers to Goddess Mahalakshmi, Lord Dhanvantari, and Kubera (the God of wealth) by lighting diyas and chanting the Lakshmi mantra and strotams.
Purchasing a new broom, gold and silver jewellery, utensils of brass and silver, electronic appliances, and vehicles is said to be highly auspicious to attract abundance in life.
