Ambubachi Mela: The Mysterious Festival of the Bleeding Goddess

What is Ambubachi Mela?

One of the most famous festivals of Hinduism, which is held annually at the Kamakhya Temple in Assam, is Ambubachi Mela. This event marks the menstruation period of Goddess Kamakhya, representing fertility, creation, and womanhood. This unique festival transforms the temple into a vibrant spiritual hub. Devotees, sadhus, tantrics, and tourists gather from all parts of India to witness the mystical aura and celebrate feminine energy.

Why & when is it celebrated?

The festival is celebrated annually from 22nd June to 26th June, when the Brahmaputra River comes to life. The temple remains closed for three days as the goddess rests. This powerful festival highlights the sacredness of fertility and womanhood. Unlike any other religious gathering, it embraces the biological and spiritual together, making it a rare, empowering, and deeply spiritual festival in the heart of Assam.

When the Goddess rests

During Ambubachi, the doors of the Kamakhya Temple remain closed for three sacred days. Worship, rituals, and entry into the temple are suspended as Maa Kamakhya is believed to undergo her annual menstruation. Even daily temple routines like cleaning and lighting lamps are stopped. This symbolic pause acknowledges nature’s cycles, emphasizing rest, regeneration, and respect for the feminine form.

A grand awakening

The temple gate reopens on the fourth day with grandeur and joy. On this day, the temple area is flooded with bhakts for darshan and blessings. Sacred water and red cloth, believed to be infused with the Goddess’s fertility powers, are distributed as prasad. Special rituals, chants, and offerings are performed. The atmosphere is electric, filled with faith and emotion. This day represents womanhood, making it the most spiritually charged moment of the Mela.

A sea of bhakts

On this occasion, millions of Maa bhakts, sadhus, and tantrics from across India and abroad gathered. The Nilachal hills come alive with camps, music, mantras, and spirituality. Despite the monsoon rains and steep climbs, the faithful crowd the temple with unmatched devotion. The Mela is well-organized with food stalls, medical camps, and security to support the massive crowd. It is Assam’s largest religious gathering and one of India’s most fascinating spiritual congregations.

Sacred grounds of tantra

One of the most important Tantric Peethas in India is the Kamakhya Temple, and during the Ambubachi Mela, a large number of Tantric practitioners, Aghoris, and Sadhus perform secret rituals, meditations, and spiritual practices. It is believed that the cloth covering the yoni of Maa is distributed as prasad and used for tantric practices. The Mela is a spiritual energy center for divine knowledge, powers, and blessings.

A blend of faith and mystery

The Ambubachi Mela is a magical blend of mysterious customs, folklore, and religion. Shock and astonishment are caused by the sea of sadhus in meditation, the belief in the Goddess' menstruation, and the mystery of Tantric practices. The dedication is tremendous, the energy is tangible, and the rituals are age-old. It is more than just a celebration; it is a living example of India's ancient spiritual traditions.
