Eat Right. Fast Pure. Receive Lord Shiva's blessings

What is Shravan Shivratri?

Shravan Shivratri is a sacred Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Shiva, celebrated during the holy month of Shravan. Devotees observe fasts, perform Shiva Puja, offer Jal Abhishek, chant mantras, and seek Lord Shiva’s blessings for peace, prosperity, and spiritual growth.

Why does food matter during the fast?

Sawan Shivratri fasting is more than avoiding meals – it is about choosing pure, sattvic foods that nourish the body and calm the mind. Eating the right vrat-friendly ingredients helps maintain energy while deepening devotion, meditation, and spiritual discipline throughout this sacred day.

Fruits: The perfect fallahar

Fresh fruits like bananas, apples, oranges, papaya, pomegranate, and seasonal fruits are excellent fasting foods. They provide natural sugars, hydration, vitamins, and sustained energy while keeping the body light, refreshed, and perfectly aligned with traditional Shivratri fasting practices.

Milk & dairy are sacred choices

Milk, curd, paneer, buttermilk, and ghee are widely consumed during Sawan Shivratri. Rich in protein and calcium, these sattvic foods help maintain strength, support digestion, and keep devotees energized while observing the fast with purity and devotion.

Vrat flour you can eat

Prepare delicious fasting dishes using kuttu (buckwheat), singhara (water chestnut), or rajgira (amaranth) flour. These gluten-free alternatives are nutritious, filling, and traditionally accepted during Shivratri fasting, making them ideal replacements for regular wheat flour.

Sabudana & root vegetables

Sabudana, samak rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin are popular vrat foods. They provide lasting energy, are easy to digest, and can be prepared in several delicious ways while staying within traditional fasting guidelines for Sawan Shivratri.

Use only Sendha Namak

Replace regular table salt with Sendha Namak (rock salt). Enhance flavors naturally using cumin seeds, black pepper, fresh ginger, and mild herbs. These ingredients are considered suitable for fasting and support better digestion throughout the day.

Foods you must avoid

Avoid wheat, rice, maida, lentils, onion, garlic, meat, fish, eggs, alcohol, tobacco, processed foods, and regular table salt. Many households also avoid brinjal and leafy vegetables during the monsoon to maintain traditional fasting discipline and hygiene.

Simple tips for a healthy fast

Drink enough water, coconut water, or fresh lemon water if permitted. Eat moderate portions, avoid overeating fried vrat foods, and focus on prayer, meditation, and chanting Lord Shiva's name to experience the true essence of Shivratri fasting.
