Jammu & Kashmir houses some of the major pilgrimage sites like Vaishno Devi, Kheer Bhavani, Raghunath, and Shankaracharya Temples. Along with this, Amarnath Yatra, the most auspicious Hindu pilgrimage, is where a mysterious phenomenon of ice Shiv Lingam (dedicated to Lord Shiva) formation occurs in the cave, remains there for a limited period, signaling immortality as the ultimate verdict of nature.
A trek to Amarnath Cave Temple (also called Baba Barfani) is spiritually uplifting but physically challenging, requiring faith, strength, & preparation. Amarnath Yatra is held every year during July-August, coinciding with the Shravan month of the Hindu calendar. The Yatra usually lasts for 45 days and is organised by Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) under strict guidelines for safety & spiritual observance.
Every pilgrim must register in advance with the SASB for the Amarnath Yatra. Registration is mandatory and helps the authorities manage safety, logistics, and medical support, and it can be done online or through designated bank branches across India. Along with the registration, it requires a Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC).
The trek to Amarnath is at a high altitude and demands good physical health and stamina. The journey includes steep climbs, uneven paths, and reduced oxygen levels. Pilgrims must undergo a medical check-up and obtain a CHC for their fitness check. Heart and respiratory patients, children below 13, and seniors above 75 are generally advised not to attempt the trek.
Pack essential things such as warm clothes, waterproof jackets, gloves, trekking shoes, a flashlight, a power bank, ID proof, and a copy of your registration. Avoid heavy baggage. Carry energy bars, dry fruits, and water bottles. A small backpack with rain gadgets is ideal. Everything should be easy to carry yet sufficient for unpredictable mountain conditions.
Due to the high altitude, the weather changes here every minute. Temperatures can drop drastically, especially at night, so always carry extra layers of clothing, a waterproof poncho, and thermal wear. Avoid cotton clothing as it retains moisture. Keep track of the weather forecast and follow official advisories during the Yatra to stay safe.
The route to the Amarnath Temple has limited medical facilities. So, carrying a personal first aid kit is highly recommended. Include basic medicines for fever, cold, headache, altitude sickness, upset stomach, and pain relief. Bandages, antiseptic cream, cotton, and ORS sachets are must-haves. If you're on medication, carry a proper stock.
