Kashmir Tourism Rallies to Rebuild Confidence Following April Security Incident

Published : 31-May-2025 06:28:39 PM

Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector is mounting a comprehensive recovery effort following the tragic April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives. As May and June traditionally represent the peak season for Kashmir’s premier destinations, typically maximum footfall is to religious sites like the Amarnath Yatra and Mata Vaishno Devi temple in Katra, Jammu, along with popular hill stations of Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has spearheaded the region’s resilience campaign through key leadership actions. In a symbolic gesture of resistance against terror, Abdullah convened a cabinet meeting in Pahalgam shortly after the attack, demonstrating the administration's commitment to maintaining normalcy and governance continuity in the face of adversity.

The government has announced plans to construct a memorial at Baisaran meadow to honor the victims, serving both as a tribute to those lost and a symbol of the region's unwavering commitment to peace and remembrance.

During a gondola ride (cable car) in Gulmarg on Wednesday, Abdullah quoted the couplet “Dil na umeed to nahi, nakaam hi to hai, lambi hai gham ki shaam, magar shaam hi to hai,” which translates to ‘the heart is not hopeless, just defeated for now. The evening of sorrow is long, but after all, it is only an evening,’ the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining optimism during challenging times.

“These lines, which I also quoted at the recent NITI Aayog meeting, serve as a reminder that even in dark times, hope must prevail. What happened recently marks one of the most difficult phases in recent years, but we have endured worse over the past four decades and always found a way to bounce back,” Abdullah stated, as reported by the local newspaper, Greater Kashmir.

The tourism sector has mobilized around the concept of ‘Kashmiriyat’, the region’s distinctive ethos encompassing hospitality, cultural harmony, and warmth toward visitors. This cultural philosophy forms the backbone of current revival efforts aimed at restoring tourist confidence.

Stakeholders have launched the ‘Srinagar Pahalgam Roadshow for Confidence,’ a strategic initiative designed to showcase the region's resilience and actively invite tourists to experience Kashmir’s unique cultural heritage. The campaign emphasizes the readiness of the valley to welcome visitors while highlighting enhanced security measures and community support systems.

Public figures have joined the recovery effort, participating in a border tourism event in Suchetgarh, Jammu, where they’ve expressed solidarity with security forces and encouraged visitors to return to the region.

Travel operators across the region have introduced special discount packages to incentivize tourism recovery, while local hoteliers are engaging in direct outreach to potential visitors. One prominent hotelier penned an open letter with the message “Come Back to Kashmir, the valley waits with open arms,” emphasizing the collective commitment to ensuring visitor safety and maintaining the region's legendary hospitality standards.

The tourism sector’s significance to Kashmir’s economy cannot be overstated. According to recent data, the region witnessed a remarkable surge in tourism last year, hosting nearly 35 lakh visitors, including 5.11 lakh Amarnath pilgrims. This influx represents not just numbers but livelihoods for hundreds of thousands of residents.

Mushtaq Chaya, Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Hoteliers Club, told Times of India that approximately 30 lakh Kashmiris are currently employed directly in tourism-related activities, with 3 lakh working specifically in hotels and associated businesses. Significantly, Chaya noted that hotels have retained their entire workforce despite the current challenges, demonstrating the industry's confidence in tourism recovery.

“Hotels didn't remove any employees, and we are hopeful that tourists will return to Kashmir,” Chaya emphasized, reflecting the sector's long-term optimism.

While acknowledging significant challenges, the combined efforts of government leadership, industry stakeholders, and community members are creating a foundation for sustained tourism recovery. The emphasis on safety, cultural authenticity, and genuine hospitality aims to restore Kashmir’s position as one of India's most cherished travel destinations.
