In a significant move to diversify tourism facilitations beyond traditional beach destinations, Goa is set to promote the ‘Ekadasha Teertha Yatra’, positioning the state as a spiritual travel destination. The initiative aims to transform Goa from a conventional leisure destination to a comprehensive pilgrimage tourism hub through its carefully curated temple circuit.
A coordination meeting was held on Monday, June 16, between representatives of 11 prominent temples across the state to discuss this ambitious pilgrimage circuit, proposing a way to resolve coordination-related issues among participating temples. The collaborative approach ensures a seamless execution of the Goa pilgrimage plan while maintaining spiritual harmony at each temple.
The comprehensive temple travel Goa circuit includes several renowned spiritual destinations, prominently featuring the Sri Manguesh Temple in Mangeshi, located in North Goa, the Sri Mahalasa Narayani Temple in Mardol, also in North Goa, the ancient Mahadev Temple in Tambdi Surla in South Goa, and the revered Sri Shantadurga Temple in Fatorpa, South Goa.
The strategic Ekadasha Yatra itinerary has been designed to allow tourists to cover four temples in a day, enabling them to complete the entire circuit in just two to three days. This efficient planning maximizes the overall spiritual tourism experience while accommodating modern travel preferences. Additionally, tourists can explore nearby attractions to enhance their overall cultural travel experience of Goa, creating a holistic heritage of the state.
The Department of Tourism has assured continued collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure the success of this Goa spiritual tourism initiative. The comprehensive approach includes site-specific solutions to facilitate smooth visitor movement and prevent congestion at temple sites.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, while addressing a gathering of 1,400 people at the Sanatan Rashtra Shankhand Mahotsav, emphasized the need to reposition Goa’s tourism narrative. He stated that while Goa has been popular for decades as the “Bhog Bhumi” (land of enjoyment) where tourists visit for sand, sun, and sea, the state is fundamentally a “Yog Bhumi” (land of Yoga) that should be celebrated for its temples and rich cultural heritage. The Chief Minister encouraged the gathering to create awareness about Goa’s cultural and spiritual assets, emphasizing that such promotion would significantly boost the state’s economy in collaboration with the tourism sector. He clarified that the government maintains a non-interventionist approach to temple management, stating in the TOI interview, “local villagers and committees are responsible for the management of temples in Goa. In every village in Goa, we have gods like Shankar, Shantadurga, and Sattari.”
This strategic repositioning of Goa as a peaceful and divine destination represents a significant shift from its traditional image as merely a leisure hangout destination. The Ekadasha heritage trail initiative is expected to attract diverse segments of tourists to the state, creating substantial economic benefits and generating employment opportunities across various sectors. By diversifying the state’s tourism positioning, Goa aims to appeal to spiritually inclined travellers, cultural enthusiasts, and heritage seekers, thereby expanding its visitor base beyond traditional beach tourism.
Tourism Director Kedar Naik emphasized a deeper significance of the initiative, stating in a Business Standard report, “Ekadasha Teertha is not just a tourism product, it is a journey of spiritual immersion, local engagement, and cultural preservation.” He further expressed gratitude to the temple committees for their wholehearted support and valuable inputs, which will help co-create a respectful and meaningful experience for all visitors. Naik further noted that the temple committees provided crucial insights to ensure that the spiritual sanctity of each temple is maintained while hosting tourists, demonstrating the collaborative approach essential for successful pilgrimage tourism in the development of Goa.
Temple committees have emphasized the critical importance of formulating comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for visitors to ensure respectful and organized spiritual tourism. They have recommended that tourist itineraries be planned with careful consideration of temple festivals and utsavs to avoid disrupting religious celebrations. Parking and traffic management have emerged as key concerns, particularly regarding the arrival of buses and large vehicles carrying tourists at temple sites. Committees have urged the tourism department to implement site-specific solutions to address these logistical challenges effectively.
The initiative represents a paradigm shift in how destinations can leverage their cultural and spiritual assets to create sustainable tourism models. By positioning the Ekadasha Teertha Yatra as a spiritual travel experience, Goa is setting the stage for long-term tourism diversification and economic growth. The successful implementation of this pilgrimage circuit is anticipated to serve as a model for other states seeking to develop their spiritual tourism potential while maintaining the authenticity and sanctity of their religious heritage sites.
